Welcome to the Rileys’ might annoy the parents of younger ‘Twilight’ and ‘New Moon’ fans. In the movie, she’ll be playing a troubled stripper and prostitute, and the young actress will bare it all in her first nude scenes. Apparently the pressure of
shooting the nude scenes was too much for Kristen Stewart, because she had her pal from ‘Twilight’ and ‘New Moon’, Nikki Reed, come to New Orleans for moral support. But if the thought of Bella as a stripper isn’t strange enough, Kristen Stewart and Nikki Reed will both be playing male transsexual characters together in the upcoming movie ‘K-11?.
Kristen Stewart has become a popular teen icon thanks to her role as Bella in ‘Twilight’ and ‘New Moon’, so the news of her doing nude scenes might disturb some fans of the ‘Twilight’ franchise, as well as parents of the younger ones. But everyone just needs to keep in mind that there have been times in the past when nude scenes were actually in the movies aimed at teens. Movies like ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’, ‘Just One of the Guys’, and ‘American Pie’ are all movies about teenagers that feature nude scenes. So perhaps parents and fans should just be glad that nude scenes have been kept out of upcoming ‘New Moon’, despite rumors to the contrary.
Somehow the thought of Kristen Stewart playing a stripper in ‘Welcome to the Rileys’ conjures up bad memories of Lindsay Lohan doing the same in ‘I
know Who Killed Me’ (although Lindsay Lohan chose to do no nude scenes in that bomb). But Kristen Stewart’s movie about a stripper that changes lives will likely at least be mediocre, and a life-changing event for her as an actress. ‘Welcome to the Rileys’ was written by the writer of tolerable movies ‘Inventing the Abbotts’ and ‘City by the Sea’; James Gandolfini and Melissa Leo are her costars; and the director’s last movie was the inventive short ‘Tooth Fairy’ (it sounds cheesy, but it’s really not bad…Chris Noth is in it, anyway). So perhaps this move could pull Kristen Stewart out of the teen idol zone and into the world of a serious actress. She’s not the first of the ‘Twilight’ and ‘New Moon’ stars to do something more adult, either; her costar Robert Pattinson has already shocked fans of the films with his role as bisexual artist Salvador Dali in ‘Little Ashes’, and Nikki Reed took on a pretty risqué role in the movie ‘Thirteen’ (which she also co-wrote).
And it’s the movie that Kristen Stewart is doing with Nikki Reed that I find most intriguing. The movie is titled ‘K-11?, which is the section of the Los Angeles jail used to house prisoners that would have trouble surviving in the general population, like transsexual and gay inmates and those that are HIV positive. Kristen Stewart and Nikki Reed will both be playing men that live as women who find themselves in and out of this section of the prison. Nikki Reed’s character is a prostitute, and the movie will take a look at the underground lifestyle of those who find themselves in the difficult situation he does. ‘K-11? is also intriguing because it is actually the directorial debut of Kristen Stewart’s mother, Jules Mann-Stewart.
Hopefully these ‘New Moon’ stars can pull off their very different roles. Playing strippers and prostitutes could either turn off their fans or help jumpstart their careers in more adult fare, and it will be interesting to see the reaction to these girls’ brave new roles.
